Musings about weakness of character

weakness of characterA few recent events and conversations spurred a newfound interest looking at how we approach our personal weaknesses.

Weaknesses can trip us up if we’re not thoughtful and compassionate in how we approach them. How does that happen?

Consider:

  • We can focus too much on trying to turn a weakness into a strength and lose sight of what we’re really good at.
  • We can let an obsession with a real or perceived vulnerability become a road block that holds us back no matter how good we may be in other areas.
  • We can let others use our shortcomings against us or to control us.
  • We can be blind to our faults, which harms ourselves as well as those around us because of our failure to see and accept the truth.
  • We over-compensate for our deficiencies and come across as inauthentic.
  • We forget that our flaws make us human and allow others to identify with us.

Our weaknesses are an essential part of who we are. Perhaps you’ll find some inspiration in one of those quotes for effectively managing yours.

in praise of downtimeA little after noon last Friday, I unplugged from technology (phone and PC) for the long holiday weekend. What bliss!

A refreshing and renewing interlude that would have been impossible in my first act of life where 24×7 connectivity and within-minutes response was expected. (more…)

Do you value accountability?

Do you value accountability?

power of accountabilityWhile doing some leadership research, I ran across this observation in an article I was reading:

“Holding people accountable is fine and well, but it should only be used as a last resort.”

Fine and well? Last resort? What horrifying advice!

In teams that I’ve led or been a member of, accountability was an inescapable success factor for managing a function or responsibility and for leading people or one’s self—it was an expectation or parameter established and communicated upfront. (more…)
